Artist Biography

David Hansen graduated in 2002 from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a BFA in studio art. He has taught papermaking and sculpture at UNO and sculpture at Metropolitan Community College. Each semester, he lectures on his work to the art appreciation class at UNO.

His homeless shelters have been exhibited locally at the Nicholas Street Gallery, Joslyn Museum’s Artistree event, and at Bellevue University. Local outdoor venues include Wind and Water, elements, Lauritzen Gardens, Shakespeare on the Green, and an informal installation in north downtown Omaha. He has also participated in faculty shows at UNO and MCC.

David’s current work brings an environmental sensitivity to our culture’s use of space and material. Employing a structure/sheathing approach, he uses natural branching and organic forms and shapes to construct shelters and lighted sculptures. The shelters enclose a space while the lighted pieces cast highlights and shadows on the walls and ceiling of a room. The viewer is encouraged to enjoy the intimacy and comfort of the transformed space.

All materials except fasteners are short-term renewable plants, condemned trees and trimmings, or recycled metal and wood.
